Boating

  • Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club. "Founded in 1932 as a sailing club, the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club has grown steadily over the years to include power boating, a robust schedule of races and regattas, cruising and a number of social activities for both our adult and youth membership.

Located on the lee (warm side) of the Palos Verdes Peninsula and overlooking LA Harbor, our clubhouse and marina are situated in the most pleasant micro-climate in the area. This unique location provides the finest (and shortest) sail to Catalina Island coves and the absolute best all-around sailing and power boating on the West Coast.

The objective of the Cabrillo Beach Yacht Club is to organize, promote and sponsor yachting and yacht racing in and about the waters of Southern California."

Community

  • Invest in San Pedro. "InvestInSanPedro.com is an organization designed to bring our town together through a common vision. This is not to be a vision of a few cause-minded people; we are concerned that the majority of San Pedrans are not aware of the potential of our town, of all the changes now in effect and that they have a right to know and make decisions about those changes, as well as making changes to the things within their control.

Our mission is to lead a vision brought about by everyday, ordinary residents with access to the web. It won't require meeting attendance or active community involvement, but it gives a voice to any San Pedro resident that is short on time but has something important to say."

Their efforts led to the establishment of a battered women's emergency shelter, Rainbow House, and the separate organization."

History

  • Port of Los Angeles Virtual History Tour. "Discover the captivating history of the Port of Los Angeles. This world-renowned harbor was established in 1907 and helped transform the small El Pueblo de Nuestra Senora La Reina de los Angeles de Porciuncula into the international City of Los Angeles we know today.

The Port of Los Angeles is located in the San Pedro Bay at the southernmost point of Los Angeles County, approximately 20 miles from downtown Los Angeles. Because of its proximity to the Pacific Ocean, the San Pedro Bay has a long history of maritime activity."

" The Fort MacArthur Museum is dedicated to the preservation and interpretation of the history of Fort MacArthur, a U.S. Army post which guarded the Los Angeles harbor from 1914 to 1974. The Museum was established in 1985, and it is housed in the corridors and galleries of historic Battery Osgood-Farley. The Fort MacArthur Reservations hold an important collection of historical structures which were part of the U.S. Army's role in the defense of the American continental coastline from invasion. These structures clearly trace the development of American coastal defenses, from the all big gun era of the turn of the century to the missile era of today.

The rooms, galleries and corridors of the Museum contain a variety of exhibits and displays which include: the history of Los Angeles harbor defenses, home-front activities in the greater Los Angeles area during the World Wars, Civil Defense, American Pacific Theater military campaigns, early American Air Defenses and the important role of Los Angeles as a military port for both the Army and the Navy."
  • Los Angeles Maritime Museum. "The Los Angeles Maritime Museum creates an awareness and appreciation of the maritime history of coastal California, with an emphasis on the people and institutions of the port city of Los Angeles. The Museum is located in the 1941 Municipal Ferry Terminal, now on the National Register of Historic Places. From 1941-1963, a ferry system transported thousands of passengers to the canneries and military bases on Terminal Island, where they could also make connections to neighboring cities and towns. Today the "ferry building" is still a place for making connections…to the community and to our shared maritime experiences.

operating with the financial assistance of the Los Angeles Maritime Museum Foundation."

We strive to help decrease the number of dogs being euthanized in our local animal shelters by providing basic training for those dogs that have behaviors which need to be modified. We also make sure sick or injured animals receive veterinary care and necessary rehabilitation. Our dogs come to us from a varity of different sources. Some dogs are rescued from our City and County Shelters, most are strays, neglected, abandoned or abused dogs, and others are from our Community Outreach Program which helps to rehome family pets."

Port

  • The Port of Los Angeles. "The Port of Los Angeles, Southern California's gateway to international commerce, is located in San Pedro Bay, just 20 miles south of downtown Los Angeles.
This booming seaport not only sustains its competitive edge with record-setting cargo operations, but is also known for its groundbreaking environmental initiatives, progressive security measures and diverse recreational and educational facilities.
The Port of Los Angeles is a department of the City of Los Angeles and is often referred to as the Los Angeles Harbor Department. The Port is operated and managed under a State Tidelands Trust that grants local municipalities jurisdiction over ports and stipulates that activities must be related to commerce, navigation and fisheries. A five-member Board of Harbor Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Los Angeles City Council to provide direction and create policy for the Port.

As a proprietary and self-supporting department, the Port is not supported by taxes. Instead, revenue is derived from fees for shipping services such as dockage, wharfage, pilotage, storage, property rentals, royalties and other Port services. Considered a landlord port, the Port of Los Angeles leases it property to tenants who then, in turn, operate their own facilities.

The Port encompasses 7500 acres, 43 miles of waterfront and features 26 cargo terminals, including dry and liquid bulk, container, breakbulk, automobile and omni facilities. Combined, these terminals handle more than 162 million metric revenue tons of cargo annually. Last year, the Port moved an impressive 7.3 million TEUs, establishing a new national container record once again. The Port is also home to the nation's most secure cruise passenger complex, the World Cruise Center."

Religious

  • Harbor Interfaith Services. "Harbor Interfaith Services offers a comprehensive network of services designed to help homeless families regain their independence and move on to a better life. The project began in 1975 under the sponsorship of the Greater Peninsula San Pedro Council of Churches. At that time, Betsy Barnhart and Father Art Bartlett organized FISH, a volunteer group supported by local faith communities. Its mission: to provide those in need with food, clothing and transportation. In the early 80s, it became obvious to FISH volunteers that homelessness was a serious problem, especially among women and children. A task force was formed to determine the feasibility of launching a shelter program. In 1983, Harbor Interfaith Shelter was established to provide emergency housing for homeless families. In 1987, it merged with Peninsula Harbor FISH. The agency has continued to grow, offering countless families the opportunity for a better life. As a result of the agency’s growth, Harbor Interfaith Shelter changed its name to Harbor Interfaith Services in 2002."

  • Cabrillo Beach Youth Waterfront Sports Center. "WELCOME to the Cabrillo Beach Youth Waterfront Sports Center—a one-of-a-kind, youth, aquatic center. Our goals are to provide unique aquatics and camping experiences for the youth of Southern California and, in turn, give youth self-confidence by exposing them to water safety, rescue methods, care and use of equipment, and physical fitness.

In January of 2003, Cabrillo Beach Youth Waterfront Sports Center was turned over to Learning for Life, a classroom-based program that provides an action-learning process with grade-specific lesson plans for grades K-12, plus a complete supplement for special-needs students. It helps youth meet the challenge of growing up by teaching character and good decision-making skills and then linking those skills to the real world.

Developed by professional educators and child-development experts, the Learning for Life curriculum has three basic components: school-based learning, connecting activities, and work-based learning. Combined, these components provide a structure through which youth learn the value of respect and responsibility while discovering a world of career opportunities.

Learning for Life was established in 1991 to meet the critical needs of young people as they face the ever-growing challenges of today's society. Since its establishment, Learning for Life has served over 10 million young people (and their families) from kindergarten to age 20 through our school and work site based programs. As we move into the 21st century, Learning for Life is poised to have an even greater impact on the youth of today."
