Beacon
House Association of San Pedro. "The Beacon House Association of
San Pedro was founded in 1974 as a private non-profit California
corporation, with the purpose of providing a peer-oriented, residential
recovery program for men whose lives had become unmanageable due to
alcoholism or addiction.
The Beacon House philosophy is that alcoholism/drug addiction is a disease
which is treatable. We believe that a kind and caring home environment and
a sound recovery program are essential to the recovery of many alcoholics.
The Beacon House Association of San Pedro recovery concept is based on
mental, physical, emotional and spiritual health and includes the
necessary establishment of basic individual self-esteem and love, combined
with a knowledge and understanding of the disease of alcoholism/drug
addiction.
The Beacon House Association of San Pedro offers hope through a program
designed with the outcome objective of a productive, responsible, and
sober life for each program participant. Our program is presented in a
pleasant, cheerful atmosphere of fellowship, where participants live and
relate with other sober alcoholics who are learning to live happily in the
real world without alcohol or mind or mood altering substances of any
kind."

dealing with some of society’s toughest social issues including child
abuse prevention, substance abuse treatment, helping disenfranchised

generation. It’s allowed our agency to affect change in the lives of more
than 2500 individuals and 300 families a year.
As we enter into our second generation of service, our primary goal is the
same; to continue to improve the quality of life in our community and for
everyone we serve. Over the years, Joint Efforts, Inc. has been at the
forefront of meeting the human and social service needs in our community.
Each time the primary objective has been to provide the best client care

Rainbow
Services. "Rainbow Services is a private non-profit organization
that provides comprehensive services to victims of family violence.
Rainbow was incorporated with the State of California in June 1983 and has
been providing continuous services since that time including both shelter
services and community based services.
Prior to becoming an independent agency, services were provided under the
auspices and oversight of the Harbor Area YWCA. A group of involved
members of the YWCA recognized that many women's lives were impacted by
violence and abuse in the home. Their efforts to support women resulted in
the provision of emergency shelter, a domestic violence hotline, and
support groups where women could openly talk about their situation.
Their efforts led to the establishment of a battered women's emergency
shelter, Rainbow House, and the separate organization."

The Port of Los
Angeles. "The Port of Los Angeles, Southern California's gateway to
international commerce, is located in San Pedro Bay, just 20 miles south of
downtown Los Angeles.
This booming seaport not only sustains its competitive edge with
record-setting cargo operations, but is also known for its groundbreaking
environmental initiatives, progressive security measures and diverse
recreational and educational facilities.
The Port of Los Angeles is a department of the City of Los Angeles and is
often referred to as the Los Angeles Harbor Department. The Port is operated
and managed under a State Tidelands Trust that grants local municipalities
jurisdiction over ports and stipulates that activities must be related to
commerce, navigation and fisheries. A five-member Board of Harbor
Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Los Angeles City
Council to provide direction and create policy for the Port.
As a proprietary and self-supporting department, the Port is not supported by
taxes. Instead, revenue is derived from fees for shipping services such as
dockage, wharfage, pilotage, storage, property rentals, royalties and other
Port services. Considered a landlord port, the Port of Los Angeles leases it
property to tenants who then, in turn, operate their own facilities.
The Port encompasses 7500 acres, 43 miles of waterfront and features 26 cargo
terminals, including dry and liquid bulk, container, breakbulk, automobile and
omni facilities. Combined, these terminals handle more than 162 million metric
revenue tons of cargo annually. Last year, the Port moved an impressive 7.3
million TEUs, establishing a new national container record once again. The
Port is also home to the nation's most secure cruise passenger complex, the
World Cruise Center."

Boys & Girls Club of the Los

go. They are left to find their own recreation, companionship and role models
sometimes good and sometimes not.

Harbor is "The Positive Place for Kids". The Clubs provide a safe place that
the youth of the community can call their own. A Positive Place where they
have the freedom to be kids and have fun while learning new skills,
cultivating talents, enhancing their character and education and learning how
to live healthy and productive lives...
The Boys and Girls Clubs of the Los Angeles Harbor is a network of three
Clubs. The Boys and Girls Club of San Pedro, The Boys and Girls Club of the
Port of Los Angeles, and the Boys and Girls Club of Wilmington. In addition,
we operate the TeenSupreme Center and a Family Resource Center in San Pedro."

Cabrillo Beach Youth
Waterfront Sports Center. "WELCOME to the Cabrillo Beach Youth
Waterfront Sports Center—a one-of-a-kind, youth, aquatic center. Our goals are
to provide unique aquatics and camping experiences for the youth of Southern
California and, in turn, give youth self-confidence by exposing them to water
safety, rescue methods, care and use of equipment, and physical fitness.
In January of 2003, Cabrillo Beach Youth Waterfront Sports Center was turned
over to Learning for Life, a classroom-based program that provides an
action-learning process with grade-specific lesson plans for grades K-12, plus
a complete supplement for special-needs students. It helps youth meet the
challenge of growing up by teaching character and good decision-making skills
and then linking those skills to the real world.
Developed by professional educators and child-development experts, the
Learning for Life curriculum has three basic components: school-based
learning, connecting activities, and work-based learning. Combined, these
components provide a structure through which youth learn the value of respect
and responsibility while discovering a world of career opportunities.
Learning for Life was established in 1991 to meet the critical needs of young
people as they face the ever-growing challenges of today's society. Since its
establishment, Learning for Life has served over 10 million young people (and
their families) from kindergarten to age 20 through our school and work site
based programs. As we move into the 21st century, Learning for Life is poised
to have an even greater impact on the youth of today."
