The Port of Los
Angeles. "The Port of Los Angeles, Southern California's gateway
to international commerce, is located in San Pedro Bay, just 20 miles
south of downtown Los Angeles.
This booming seaport not only sustains its competitive edge with
record-setting cargo operations, but is also known for its groundbreaking
environmental initiatives, progressive security measures and diverse
recreational and educational facilities.
The Port of Los Angeles is a department of the City of Los Angeles and is
often referred to as the Los Angeles Harbor Department. The Port is
operated and managed under a State Tidelands Trust that grants local
municipalities jurisdiction over ports and stipulates that activities must
be related to commerce, navigation and fisheries. A five-member Board of
Harbor Commissioners are appointed by the Mayor and confirmed by the Los
Angeles City Council to provide direction and create policy for the Port.
As a proprietary and self-supporting department, the Port is not supported
by taxes. Instead, revenue is derived from fees for shipping services such
as dockage, wharfage, pilotage, storage, property rentals, royalties and
other Port services. Considered a landlord port, the Port of Los Angeles
leases it property to tenants who then, in turn, operate their own
facilities.
The Port encompasses 7500 acres, 43 miles of waterfront and features 26
cargo terminals, including dry and liquid bulk, container, breakbulk,
automobile and omni facilities. Combined, these terminals handle more than
162 million metric revenue tons of cargo annually. Last year, the Port
moved an impressive 7.3 million TEUs, establishing a new national
container record once again. The Port is also home to the nation's most
secure cruise passenger complex, the World Cruise Center."

- Dodson Middle
School. "Dodson Middle School, which opened in 1960, serves a
socio-economically and racially diverse student body of 1873. Dodson has a
regular magnet school program on its campus. One thousand four hundred
seventeen students are in the regular program and come from a wide variety
of backgrounds and cultures with 15% white, 9% black, 2% Asian and 70%
Hispanic.
The single family homes surrounding the school represent upper middle
class families and community. Approximately 150 students come from this
area. A larger number of students live in single family middle income
homes. Other students are from Harbor Hills and Park Western Estates which
are Los Angeles County subsidized housing projects that are within walking
distance of school. Dodson also serves the community of Wilmington. More
than 600 students receive bus transportation from Wilmington and the Dana
Strand subsidized city housing project."

- Port of Los Angeles
Waterfront Red Car Line. "For sixty years, the Los Angeles area
was served by a vast network of electric railway lines operated by the
Pacific Electric Railway. Affectionately known as “Red Cars”, the Pacific
Electric’s trolleys and interurban cars blanketed the Los Angeles area on
more than 1000 miles of rail lines. The last remnant of the system was
abandoned in 1961. Forty-two years later, a small piece of the system has
been resurrected in San Pedro, as the Port of Los Angeles Waterfront Red
Car Line.
Riders can experience the thrill of a real 1920s-era trolley ride, thanks
to the remarkable railcars that have been built to serve the line. Regular
operation is conducted with two new replica railcars carefully patterned
after an actual 1909 Pacific Electric “Red Car” design. A third car,
restored in the 1960’s from an actual 1907-vintage Pacific Electric car,
is available for special operations including charters."
