Olympic Soccer Matches, the 1994 Men's World Cup, the 1999 Women's World
Cup, the 2002 BCS National College Football Championship Game and numerous
other memorable events over the past eighty plus years.
Gamble House. "The
Gamble House in Pasadena, California, is an outstanding example of
American Arts and Crafts style architecture. The house and furnishings
were designed by Charles and Henry Greene in 1908 for David and Mary
Gamble of the Procter and Gamble Company. The house, a National Historic
Landmark, is owned by the City of Pasadena and operated by the University
of Southern California and is open for public tours." Comment:
The Gamble house is on my top ten places to see in the Los Angeles area if
you are interested in architecture and design. Visiting the Gamble
house is experientially similar to visiting Frank Lloyd Wright's Falling Water House. Once
you have seen the Gamble House or the Falling Water House you will wonder
why so many contemporary homes are so poorly designed.
Tournament of Roses.

Pasadena Heritage. "The
mission of Pasadena Heritage is to identify, preserve and protect the
historic, architectural, and cultural resources of the City of Pasadena
through advocacy, education, and oral histories.
Pasadena Heritage works to protect Pasadena's architectural and cultural
resources; advocates for endangered buildings; offers tours, workshops,
lecture and other educational programs; and provides consultation and
referral services for members."
Pasadena Museum of History.
"Founded in 1924 as the Pasadena Historical Society, the Pasadena Museum
of History operates the only Museum and Research Library devoted solely to
preserving and educating the public about the history of Pasadena and the
west San Gabriel Valley."
The Huntington. "The
Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens is a collections-based research and educational
institution established in 1919 by Henry E. and Arabella Huntington. Henry
Huntington, a key figure in the development of Southern California in the
early 20th century, was also an active collector of rare books and
manuscripts, art, and plants. By the time he established the institution,
he and his wife had amassed an extensive collection focusing on British
and American history, literature, and art, as well as rare and spectacular
plant specimens.
Located 12 miles from Los Angeles in San Marino, California, the
institution serves some 1,800 scholars each year conducting advanced
research in the humanities. The library’s rare books and manuscripts
constitute one of the world’s largest and most extensively used
collections in America outside of the Library of Congress. Researchers who
use the collections produce the leading scholarly books and articles in
their fields. These, in turn, become the basis for the textbooks that are
used in elementary, secondary, and undergraduate education across the
nation. The Huntington also serves some 20,000 school children in the Los
Angeles area, providing informal botanical, art, and library education
through extensive on-site programs. Among the treasures for research and
exhibition are the Ellesmere manuscript of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales, a
Gutenberg Bible on vellum, the double-elephant folio edition of Audubon’s
Birds of America, a world-class collection of the early editions of
Shakespeare’s works, original letters of Washington, Jefferson, Franklin,
and Lincoln, and an unsurpassed collection of materials relating to the
history of the American West.
The library’s 120 acres of botanical gardens are divided into multiple
thematic areas: the Rose Garden, Shakespeare and Herb Gardens, Desert
Garden, Japanese Garden, Australian Garden, Subtropical and Jungle Garden,
Palm Garden, North Vista, and Camellia Collection. The newly constructed
Rose Hills Foundation Conservatory for Botanical Science is home to
multiple interactive educational exhibits, targeting school children
through a $1.75 million grant from the National Science Foundation. The
first phase of construction is now underway for a new 12-acre Chinese
garden, the largest outside of China..."
Bungalow Heaven Neighborhood

from the 1900s through the 1930s. The history of this neighborhood is
woven from the threads of several rich and fascinating stories that
include the settlement of Pasadena, the evolution of the American Arts &
Crafts movement and social and cultural changes of the early 20th century.
Bungalow Heaven has been featured in several books, newspaper features and
magazines, including Sunset, which named Bungalow Heaven the "Best
Neighborhood" in the West in 2002."
