Animal Shelters

Horses

  • International Generic Horse Association. "This space is normally reserved for an organization's 'Mission Statement', but we at IGHA/HorseAid don't list any such 'published statement' as we believe the mission of any such organization as ours is pretty much self-evident; the abolishment of all equine abuse and slaughter, owner education in the ways and needs of horses -- including intelligent breeding programs that do not contribute to the equine overpopulation problem, laws severely restricting the commercial exploitation of horses, and 'common sense' humane equine legislation adopted as the norm for all the land..."
  • Palos Verdes Chapter of the California Dressage Society. "We are located in the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula of the Los Angeles South Bay. We are a dedicated group of dressage enthusiasts whose goal is to improve our horsemanship. Our membership includes dressage riders at all levels, several judges, trainers and a technical delegate."
  • Jolene's Horse Rescue. "Jolene's Horse Rescue is dedicated to the rescue of those unfortunate horses bound for slaughter.
We work directly with the "killer buyers" in Southern California and New Mexico, where our people find purchasers for the animals destined for a 1,500-mile trek to the packing plants in Texas.

At our ranch we currently have many horses who are simply waiting for the right owner to give them a new lease on life, along with a dignity they deserve. Many are young, sound, intelligent and broke to ride, with many more years ahead of them on the trail.

We are still working on expanding our program, and we thank our many sponsors who have made it possible."

Pets

  • Ace of Hearts. "We are a 501c-3 dog rescue foundation dedicated to rescuing dogs, the day they are to be euthanized, from various Los Angeles shelters and placing them in loving homes. We do NOT take dogs in... we rescue only from shelters. The Ace of Hearts Foundation is in memory of "Ace", a wonderful American Bull dog who was rescued from death, and touched the lives of many! (Especially founder Kari Whitman!) We rescue all breeds...and don't discriminate against any!"
  • Actors and Others for Animals!  "Actors and Others for Animals is a California 501(c)(3) non-profit corporation dedicated to the promotion of the humane treatment of animals. Our main mission is to curb the pet overpopulation problem by subsidizing spay/neuter surgeries. Together with other vital services, we are there to help pet guardians living on a low and/or fixed income care for their beloved companions."
  • Animal Advocacy and Relief Foundation. Also known as Pooch Heaven. The Animal Advocacy and Relief Foundation ( Pooch Heaven ) is a registered non-profit, charitable organization dedicated to the rescue and placement of stray dogs. The foundation was formed by a dedicated group of individuals, who, at their own expense, have been searching the streets of Los Angeles for stray dogs and unwanted pets for several years.

Their loose network of dog rescuers have come together under the umbrella of the Animal Advocacy and Relief Foundation, which was made possible by the generous donations of several benefactors who have committed to continued support of our mission, both in time and money. The foundation asks that you also show your support for their heroic efforts and contribute to the cause."
  • Animal Lovers of South Bay. "The specific objectives and purposes of this Calif charitable corporation is the rescue and placement of Shelter, abandoned and abused animals. To promote and educate the public of their responsibilities to help pet over population by spaying and neutering their animals. To work with the local legislatures and authorities to promote programs that will better educate the public in the health and maintenance of their pets, and to improve animal welfare. To interface with other animal welfare organizations to insure that the animals rights are not abused or violated. To offer our services to the local shelters and government agencies, to serve as educators in the community with respect to animal over population, unwanted strays, licensing, owner responsibilities."
  • Animal Match Rescue Team, Inc. "AMRT.NET is dedicated to facilitating adoption of shelter and rescue pets in the Southern California area. We believe there are a lot of pets euthanized in shelters while there are potential pet owners looking to adopt and cannot find them. The goal of the creators of this web site is to assist potential pet owners in finding a shelter or rescued pet."
  • Bark Animal Foundation.
  • Bill Foundation. "Did you know there is a big problem here in Los Angeles? There are too many homeless dogs. Here at Bill Foundation we want to tell you all about it because we need your help to solve this crisis. Right now only 30% of lost dogs are reclaimed by their owners, the other 70% only have a 20% chance of finding a new home. Most are euthanized because there is simply no room.

While the problem may seem overwhelming, Bill Foundation, like many grassroots organizations across the country, has chosen to face the problem head on. Working locally in Los Angeles, our goal is to place healthy, adoptable animals in new and loving homes while aiding in the fight against pet overpopulation. We also help care for those animals less fortunate - those who need a little more time to get their health back or may have behavioral problems requiring advanced training before going to a new home.

These dogs are real. The volunteers who go to the shelters to rescue our dogs are haunted by the faces of the dogs they must leave behind. Bill Foundation relies on donations to continue and expand its work. Every dollar contributed brings us closer to the day when no dogs are left behind to be euthanized..."
  • Boston Buddies.org. "Boston Buddies / Southern California Boston Terrier Rescue (SCABTR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to rescuing Boston Terriers who are abandoned, neglected, or abused and placing them in permanent, loving homes. We also accept dogs from private individuals, who for whatever reason must relinquish their Boston Terrier(s). Our ultimate purpose is to match homeless or potentially homeless Boston Terriers with loving permanent families, specifically interested in the breed. We do this by providing temporary foster care, necessary and reasonable medical treatment, personality assessments of the animals, and interviews and homechecks of potential adopters. Each dog is examined by a veterinarian and provided with all necessary and reasonable medical treatment, vaccinated, spayed or neutered, and put on heartworm preventative. We operate throughout Los Angeles, Orange, and Ventura Counties."
  • Boxer Rescue L.A. "We are a non-profit organization staffed primarily by volunteers. We are funded solely by private donations. Generous boxer owners and lovers across the country donate what they can when they can to assist our efforts. Besides the minimal adoption donations we collect, we organize fundraising events, sell merchandise and are continually working on ways to better the lives of the boxers we care for. We operate two large capacity kennels which can house up to 120 boxers at any one time. It is a constant struggle to raise the needed funds but it is a labor of love. The most important factor in how we are able to operate is the dedication and commitment of our volunteers and their passion for Boxers. We could not operate without those who donate their time or money or both......Adoption services: We care for and place hundreds of Boxers, of all ages each year into loving homes. We have many returning clients who through the years have adopted their boxers from BRLA. Our boxers live at our facility allowing us to interact daily with them to understand their nature and temperament. Our adoption teams work very hard in matching the right boxer with your needs and lifestyle. We do everything we can to select a dog that will fit right into your life."
  • Canine Companions. "Canine Companions for Independence is a non-profit organization that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships.

  • Coalition for Pets & Public Safety. "The Coalition for Pets & Public Safety is a non-profit organization with 501 ( C) (3) status. We are a diverse group of citizens with a common goal to eliminate the pet overpopulation problem.
The Coalition for Pets & Public Safety is focusing on spay and neuter programs to alleviate the needless pain and suffering of thousands of animals killed in Los Angeles shelters."
  • Doberman Rescue. "Director, Nina Culver established Doberman Rescue in 1968 to provide shelter and find new homes for unwanted, discarded and abused Dobermans. The Rescue has always been a "no-kill" shelter and once an animal comes into our kennel, he or she will remain as long as it takes to find that perfect home. We are a non-profit 501c-3 organization. There is no paid staff, including the Director. Donations and adoption fees go directly back into the care of the animals.

Located in Sun Valley, a suburb of Los Angeles California, we're the oldest Doberman rescue in the country.
The shelter can house 80 Dobermans and we are constantly filled to capacity. It seems as though each time one dog finds a new home, two more come through our doors.
Our purebred Dobermans range in age from teenagers to adults to senior citizens. We periodically have puppies available.

Every animal entering our shelter receives a complete medical check-up, vaccinations and any special medical attention the dog might need. All our animals are spayed or neutered before placement.

Potential adopters go through a careful screening process. No dog leaves our care until Nina has made certain that he or she will be going into a loving, safe and permanent home.

We are available throughout the dog's life to answer any questions the owner may have. In the unlikely event that the dog does not work into the family, we will take the animal back. Part of the adoption contract includes the agreement that the dog will returned to Doberman Rescue and cannot be given to a third party."

  • Friends of Animals Foundation.
  • For the Animals Foundation. "For The Animals Foundation has been a compassionate presence in the South Bay for over 20 years. We are an all-volunteer, non-profit organization founded in 1983. Our primary mission is two-fold:

    (1) We promote public awareness of the importance for spaying/neutering of all pets including cats, dogs, rabbits, hamsters, guinea pigs, pet rats, etc. This is key to reducing the critical pet over population. L.A. County alone puts to death over 221,000 innocent animals each year because there are no homes for them. Tragically, this figure keeps growing.

    (2) For The Animals volunteers visit local shelters where we rescue dogs who are about to be euthanized because no one has adopted them. We purchase those that we feel have a good chance to be adopted. We then bathe, groom, nurse them to good health when required, have them spayed or neutered, and provide them their shots. Finally, we care for them in volunteer doggie foster homes where they get lots of love until someone, like you, adopts them.

We are all pet loving volunteers. Your help as a caring volunteer as well as tax deductible donations are always welcome and needed to help us continue this essential activity. 100% of donations go to benefit the animals...

  • German Shepherd Rescue Los Angeles, Orange County, Tehachapi. "German Shepherd Rescue is a no-kill shelter dedicated to saving and finding homes for purebred German Shepherd Dogs. We are a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization run by volunteers and funded entirely by donations and adoption fees.
The shelter is located in Burbank, California and was founded in 1979 by Grace Konosky. Grace has been involved in animal rescue for over 21 years. Her dedication to the German Shepherd Dog is what inspired her to open the rescue. She operates the rescue every day of the year.
The shelter houses about 25 to 30 dogs while they are waiting to be adopted. We get a wide variety of purebred German Shepherd Dogs, including all white shepherds, long-haired, AKC registered, shepherds of all different sizes and markings, and all different ages. Most of our dogs are between the ages of one and five years old. Although we occasionally get puppies, we find that many owners will keep a puppy until it starts to become an adult, and then turn it in to a shelter or rescue (if it's lucky).

While the dog is at the rescue, volunteers get to know them and evaluate each one individually. This enables the rescue to match each dog with the best possible home. Any known medical problems are also addressed at this time. The dogs are well taken care of while they are at the rescue."
  • Glendale Humane Society. "The Glendale Humane Society is a private non-profit 501(c)(3) humane rescue and education organization, founded in 1924. For almost 80 years, the GHS has worked to find safe, loving homes for lost, unwanted and abandoned companion animals in Southern California.

  • Lange Foundation. "Dedicated to saving impounded companion animals, and preparing them for a journey to a new, safe, loving world."
  • Lhasa Happy Homes Rescue, Inc. "Our ongoing mission is to match families with their ideal pets and give these special homeless pups a second chance at a great new life. It is staggering to see these beautiful dogs dumped in the shelters or abandoned by their families day after day, year after year.
We concentrate on the dogs of our breed (Lhasa Apso, Shih Tzu, Maltese and small breed mixes) who have ended up on the shelters through no fault of their own. Many of these dogs have critical injuries, require surgery, are senior in age and/or have otherwise been left to die.

It’s not the dog’s fault; it’s really human error 99% of the time due to a lack of education or misinformation about these breeds. It is our goal to educate the public about these dogs, their needs, training requirements and the social environment they require to live long and happy lives with their humans.

It is gratifying when people, like yourself, step up to the plate and help these beautiful animals....perfect with all their imperfections.
We are honored to have the opportunity to provide you with your next family member."
