- Martin Luther King Jr. /Drew

Center began
as the result of a community need. Following the 1965 Watts' Civil
Unrest/Riot, a Commission appointed by the Governor reported a lack of

In 1966, Los Angeles County Department of Hospitals established a task
force to develop a program concept that would provide a full-service
community/teaching hospital operated by the County in conjunction with the
Drew Medical Society, USC and UCLA.
On March 27, 1972, the hospital opened its doors to the community as a
full-service medical center. In 1981, the hospital expanded by opening the
Augustus F. Hawkins Mental Health Center. The hospital expanded again in
1998, by opening a state-of-the-art Trauma and Diagnostic Center that is
dedicated to treating patients who have sustained accidental and
intentional trauma injuries. Today, with a licensed bed capacity of 537

-
Harbor/UCLA Medical Center. "Harbor-UCLA Medical Center began as
a station hospital at the LA Port of Embarkation. In June 1946, the US
Army sold the entire facility as war surplus to the LA County Department
of Charities. Harbor General Hospital opened one month later with 60 beds
and 70 employees. In 1948, Harbor General Hospital affiliated with the
School of Medicine at UCLA. Following the passage of a bond issue in the
mid 1950's, a new 8 story replacement facility opened in 1963. While the
basic structure has changed very little since that time, there have been
remodeling programs to keep the hospital current with changes in medical
practice. The ER has been enlarged and a number of special care units have
been constructed from what were formerly ward rooms. In 1994, the 50,000
square foot Edward J. Foley Primary Care and Diagnostic Center was opened.
Over the years, the hospital and medical programs of the facility have
grown and improved steadily.
Through it's research and clinical expertise, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center
has achieved an international reputation. Funded research expenditures
exceed $47 million annually with major clinical discoveries in perinatal,
vaccine, and women's care research. As a center for excellence and
innovation, Harbor- UCLA Medical Center is well poised to be an active
participant in the restructuring of the health care delivery marketplace."

means that our patients benefit from the latest diagnostic and treatment
techniques in virtually every area of medicine."
- Mattel Children's
Hospital at UCLA. "The UCLA Department of Pediatrics was
founded in 1950, and the Marion Davies wing construction was completed
in 1962. Since that time, we have grown to include affiliation with
Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, Martin Luther King/Drew University,
Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and Olive View Medical Center. The
Children's Health Center was moved to 200 Medical Plaza in 1990, and in
the last three years, we have expanded our outpatient sites in the
community. Our goals are patient care, teaching, and research to meet
the missions of the department and the University. Known worldwide for
its research and expertise in complex procedures, UCLA Medical Center
year after year is ranked among the leaders in pediatrics by U.S. News
and World Reports annual survey of "America's Best Hospitals."
In 1995, we became a member of the National Association of Children's
Hospitals and Related Institutions NACHRI, and classified as a "hospital
within a hospital." Through NACHRI, Mattel Childrens' Hospital at UCLA
is involved in grassroots legislation for children's issues. Our board
members, faculty and administrators have met with representatives at the
city, state, and federal levels to express concern with legislation
affecting our children and the ability to render healthcare. We focus on
these issues because children do not have a voice in determining policy
that will impact their lives. In 1998, the hospital was renamed the
Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA in recognition of a generous pledge
to the hospital by Mattel, Inc.
By 2006, the Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA will be housed in a new
state-of-the-art medical facility UCLA plans to build to replace the
current UCLA Medical Center. Construction of the new medical complex,
designed by renowned architect I.M. Pei, began in 2000.
Mattel Children's Hospital at UCLA offers a full spectrum of primary and
specialized medical care for infants, children and adolescents. Its
mission is to provide treatment for children in a compassionate
atmosphere, as well as to conduct research that improves the
understanding and treatment of pediatric diseases. We also have a
nationally recognized Child Life Development Program."

Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA. "The Stewart &
Lynda Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital at UCLA (NPH) is one of the

Center for the Health Sciences, one of the nation's leading medical
centers. The NPH staff is composed of members of Psychiatry, Neurology,
Medicine, Pediatrics, and members from the professional disciplines of

care of patients at the NPH."

annual survey of "America's Best Hospitals."
More than 300,000 people from Los Angeles, from across the country, and

of our physicians are cited in The Best Doctors in America, which is
based on an extensive poll of thousands of medical specialists.
The collaboration of patient care, medical education and scientific
research form the foundation of UCLA Medical Center. Each part of the
triad enhances and enriches the other so that patients receive
compassionate care based on the latest medical knowledge.
UCLA Medical Center, with more than 600 beds, offers patients of all
ages comprehensive care, from routine to highly specialized medical and
surgical treatment. Some factors that contribute to our top rankings are
specialized intensive care units, state-of-the-art inpatient and
outpatient operating suites, a Level-1 trauma center, the latest
diagnostic technology, and a high level of commitment from our dedicated
and experienced staff of over 1,000 physicians and 3,500 nurses,
therapists, technologists and support personnel.
Noted for the scope and quality of our specialty and subspecialty care,
UCLA offers the same level of expertise in the primary care areas of
