- Laamn · Los Angeles
Alternative Media Network. "Los Angeles Alternative Media
Network (LAAMN) Mission Statement:
LAAMN is a network of journalists in print, radio, video, TV, film, as
well as internet publishers, photographers, musicians, artists and media
watch activists who have come together to develop a strong presence for
the independent, alternative media in Southern California.
Through cross-collaboration, we intend to reach a wide audience with a
progressive message and report on the developing social, political, and
cultural movements of the time, providing a 'voice for the voiceless'
throughout the Southland. We are culturally inclusive, opposed to racism,
sexism and homophobia and function democratically as a network of working
groups around various projects. We stand for tolerance, justice, equality
and human rights as opposed to corporate-controlled media which stand for
profit and keeping the majority of people ignorant of political, economic
and social issues which impact them."
- LA Cacophony.
"Announcement only list for the Los Angeles Cacophony Society, an open
network of creative malcontents, guerrilla artists, slackers, hooligans,
kitsch-hounds, and anyone else interested in subverting primetime reality.
3-5 mailings announcing events in Southern California per month."
- LAopenings · Los
Angeles Art Openings. "This is an ART announcement list for the
Los Angeles metro area - not a discussion group.
One email is sent to subscribers every Thursday listing all of the ART
receptions / performances / events happening in the Los Angeles area
during the following week.
Generally, there are 5-10 shows a week that are not listed in the Weekly,
LAopenings includes all of those plus all of the listed events.
LAopenings is organized by date of event - not by location. This makes it
easy to plan to see mulptiple events on a specific day of the week.
If there is a show coming up that will not be listed in the Weekly, and
you'd like me to post it to the list, please send the basic information:
-name and address of venue
-name of event, one sentence description
-run of show
-date and time of event
-contact #
to: LAopenings AT gmail.com (substitute the @ symbol for AT, doing this to
your email address on public sites prevents spamming.
LAopenings will never sell or trade your email address. )."
- Los Angeles County
Folk Arts. "Los Angeles County Folk Arts (LAFolkArts)
An on-line network for the folk and traditional arts community of Greater
Los Angeles. The purpose of LAFolkArts is to provide information of
interest and a forum for discussion. Postings include performances,
exhibits and events; funding opportunities; information on gatherings,
conferences, workshops and mentorships; and discussion of artistic issues.
What are Folk and Traditional Arts?
Folk and traditional arts deeply reflect cultural heritage and can express
an artist’s or community’s sense of identity or way of life. They are
passed down through the generations within a family or community that
share a common ethnic heritage, language, religion, occupation or region.
Folk art can be music, dance, visual arts and crafts, storytelling, and
cuisine. Some folk and traditional arts have been brought to California
from other countries, taken root here and become woven into the state’s
cultural identity, while others have prospered within indigenous tribes
for centuries.
Folk art is…Mexican mariachi music, West African hair braiding, Balinese
gamelan, Western saddle making, Chinese opera, African-American gospel
quartets, Hawaiian hula, Hmong embroidery, Anglo-American old-time
fiddling, Native American basketry, Cuban bata drumming, Japanese tea
ceremonies, Mennonite quilting, South Indian bharata natyam dance…the list
is as long as our region is diverse.
LAFolkArts was founded by the Los Angeles County Arts Commission, and is
sponsored by the California Traditional Music Society, a facility of the
City of Los Angeles Cultural Affairs Department.
