Santa Monica Pier. "On
September 9, 1909, after sixteen months of construction, the Santa Monica
Municipal Pier opened to the public. This was California Admission Day,
and the thousands of people who swarmed onto the 1,600-foot-long wooden
pier were in a holiday mood as they enjoyed a festive day of band
concerts, swimming races and the novelty of walking above the waters of
the Pacific Ocean.
The Pier's continuing ability to attract large crowds impressed Charles
Looff, a pioneer amusement entrepreneur who had built Coney Island's first
carousel in Brooklyn, New York and then opened a carousel factory nearby.
Sensing vast potential for amusement attractions on the Southern
California coast, he moved his operations to Long Beach in 1910, when he
began to consider building a pleasure pier of his own."

Santa Monica Pier Aquarium: Heal the Bay. "Not so long ago,
at a time when Santa Monica Bay was treated daily as a dump site, a
small group of concerned people took it upon themselves to heal this
troubled part of the world. They did it for those who simply wanted to
swim, fish or surf safely in clean water. And they did it for the
marine life that was suffering from some of the highest levels of
contamination found anywhere along our nation's coastline.
Heal the Bay's efforts are focused on Santa Monica Bay and surrounding
Southern California coastal waters. Our work, however, often impacts
water quality for the entire state of California and even the nation.
That small group swelled into an organization and movement that has
done more to recover the Bay's coastal environment than anyone could
have expected. But in the process, they did more than that. They
showed us that it's not too late for Southern California, that no
agency is too big to fight and win, that we can heal our environment
and that we can heal our Bay."

Farmer's Market. "All four Santa Monica markets are Certified
Farmers' Markets (CFM's). They are organized and managed by the city for
the mutual benefit of all who enjoy them. An estimated 900,000 shoppers
visit the markets every year. Collectively, they provide their customers
year-round with a selection of fresh, seasonal produce that is pre-eminent
among market programs in the state.
Certified Farmers' Markets were established in 1978, when then-governor
Jerry Brown signed legislation known as the Direct Marketing Act. This
enabled California farmers to sell their own produce directly to consumers
at locations designated by the Department of Agriculture."
