- City of Avalon, Santa Catalina
Island, CA. "Avalon is situated on the easterly portion of
Catalina Island, 22 miles south/southwest of the Los Angeles Harbor
breakwater. Avalon is a little over 2 2/3 square miles in size. The island
itself is 76 square miles in area, 85% of which is in a conservancy area
to be maintained in its natural state in perpetuity. The picturesque and
leisurely seaport village of Avalon has a permanent population of around
3,500, with an annual visitor count of close to one million. Catalina
Island is part of Los Angeles County. Avalon schools however, are part of
the Long Beach Unified School District. The Island's primary industry is
tourism.
The climate is mild and seldom gets above 85 degrees in the summer.
Usually, the temperature gets no lower than the 50's in the winter.
Because the city hugs the water, evenings can be cool during the summer,
and very cold in the winter. Avalon has no smog and the waters of the bay,
as well as surrounding the island, are crystal clear."
- Library of Avalon, CA.
- Avalon Public Library.
"The Avalon library was established in February of 1914.
Led by the Mary Williams Club (now the Santa Catalina Woman's Club), and the
Avalon Chamber of Commerce the townspeople came together to meet the offer
that Los Angeles County presented to them "if the citizens could provide
furniture, shelves, a space and volunteers to run it", Los Angeles County
would furnish the books.
In February 1914, the first L.A. County Public Library "overseas branch",
opened at the Grandview Hotel with 196 books, courtesy of the County, the
number doubled by that summer.
In November 1915, a raging fire destroyed most of the town, including the
library. H.W. Allen managed to salvage 100 books which he stored in his home
until a new quarters could be found for the library.
The Sophia yacht club was the first in a series of locations which included
City Hall, Kassar Building, Hotel Atwater Arcade, 211Metropole Ave, and 208
Metropole Ave.
In the Spring of 1962 the Avalon Library found a home in the new County Center
at 215 Summer Ave."

- eCatalina.com. "Much of
my childhood was spent aboard the family sailboat tethered to a mooring in
Santa Catalina Island's Isthmus Bay. We spent our days searching for
treasures among the shoreline rocks, hiking the dusty trails, eating ice
cream at the snack bar as it melted down our cones, and playing endless
card games until the last bit of daylight was gone. It was such a rare
treat when my Dad would venture down to Avalon in search of a mooring. My
brothers, my little sister and I would happily forsake the peaceful
solitude of Two Harbors for the excitement that always awaited us in
Avalon.
A few years later my husband, Dave, and I spent our honeymoon in Avalon
and returned several times over the years always saying how wonderful it
would be to live here. In 1996 we become permanent full-time residents
with our two sons.
As a web consultant the move was fairly easy because I didn't have to find
a job. Over the years my clients have slowly shifted from mainland
businesses to island businesses. When the requests for web development
started coming in I realized that there was a need for a site like
eCatalina.com. I envisioned beautiful island photography, informative
articles, a place where every business and activity on the island could be
found. I wanted a site that would convey the uniqueness of the Island, its
history and the attachment that those of us that have spent time here
never forget." Lori Montgomery.

"Welcome to Santa Catalina Island, California’s only island resort
destination. Whether you are a first-time visitor looking for a romantic
weekend getaway or a frequent guest planning another trip to paradise,
Santa Catalina Island is a unique escape from the frenzied pace of
mainland life.
Santa Catalina Island represents a refreshing and unusual contrast to the
densely populated urban areas of Southern California. In order to preserve
this valuable open space for public enjoyment, the Wrigley Family deeded
approximately 88 percent of the island in 1975 to the nonprofit Catalina
Island Conservancy. The Santa Catalina Island Company, established in
1894, is the principal landowner of the remaining private land and focuses
on preserving the island’s unique charm and character.
Catalina Island is part of Los Angeles County. Located 22 miles off the
California mainland, the island comprises 76 square miles and boasts 52
miles of spectacular coastline. The island consists of two quaint
commercial centers: Avalon, population 3,500, and Two Harbors, population
100."
- History.
"People have been living on Santa Catalina Island for at least 7,000
years. Archaeologists excavating on a limited scale at Little Harbor on
the seaward side of the Island for the past 40 years keep coming up with
earlier and earlier dates. They find evidence of increasingly complex
material cultures with a strong maritime adaptation. These earlier
groups of peoples exploited the rich resources of the sea--from abalone
and other mollusks, to small and large fish, and marine mammals such as
sea lions..."
- Museum. "The
Catalina Island Museum celebrates the Island's rich cultural heritage.

CAPUC permitted cross channel Catalina passenger service from Dana Point
Harbor.
The Catalina Explorer Co. began operating in the summer of 1999 with

daily to Avalon from Dana Point. The company, founded and operated by
San Clemente resident Donn Dill and other members of the Dill family,
launched it's first cross channel trip on June 23rd 1999 with 6 people
onboard for the inaugural 90 minute Dana Point to Avalon crossing. At
the time, the company consisted of 2 part time captains, 6 total crew
members, and 1 phone operator answering calls from the Dill residence."
- Catalina Express.
"Catalina Express was formed in 1981 with one 60-passenger vessel
providing scheduled service between Los Angeles and Catalina Island.
Today, the company has evolved into a leading provider of passenger boat
transport service in the West and a major promoter of tourism to the
island paradise, which is situated 22 miles off the Southern California
coast. In its 22-year history, Catalina Express has carried more than 15
million passengers to and from Catalina. It prides itself in offering
comfortable and personalized service to residents as well as visitors.
The company was formed by three Island residents who saw the need for
reliable transport and who worked tirelessly to develop the means of
providing it. Over the years, concern for passenger safety and comfort
has always been a high priority for the founders - Doug and Greg
Bombard, a father and son team, who with colleague Tom Rutter,
continuously strive to upgrade the company's fleet. Working closely with
boat builders to design vessels to specifically serve the waters of the
Catalina Channel, they introduced features such as full ride control
systems for vessel stability and state-of-the-art navigational
equipment. Next came airline-style cabin seating, panoramic viewing
windows and on-deck seating, which won immediate acceptance by
passengers. Today, Catalina Express operates a modern fleet of seven
vessels that run on published daily schedules from boat terminals in
Long Beach, San Pedro and Dana Point. In 1999, a state-of-the-art
catamaran named Starship Express was introduced into service from Long
Beach. Featuring two passenger decks, special Commodore Lounge seating,
and a top deck for open-air seating, the catamaran carries up to 302
passengers at speeds of 37 knots..."
