of Commerce. "The Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce (GRCC)
was an important player in Riverside's economic and community life
throughout the 20th century. In 2004, the organization is nearly 1700
members strong, and is dedicated to helping Riverside become even greater.
As one of the oldest, largest, and most influential chambers in the state,
the GRCC works closely with local government and other entities to
stimulate development and improve the quality of life. The dedicated
volunteerism and contributions from a large number of local business
leaders and entities make this possible.
The Chamber is pro-actively involved in every important issue facing
Riverside. Chamber leaders bring people together to solve problems; they

City
County
- Edmund Jaeger. "This site is
established in gratitude for all that Dr. Jaeger contributed to the
understanding and appreciation of the California deserts. His memory lives
on in his many books and articles, and also in the semi-annual visits that
his friends and interested people make to the many desert sites that he
frequented. These "Palavers," as he called them, are intended to give
people a first-hand experience of our wonderful desert heritage - an
experience not gained just by reading about the desert.
In addition to the various articles now on this site, the intention is
that this will be an extensive repository for finding information about
Dr. Jaeger - both in the print media and on the World Wide Web."
- History of
Riverside, CA from the City of Riverside. "Founded in 1870 by
John North and a group of Easterners who wished to establish a colony
dedicated to furthering education and culture, Riverside was built on land
that was once a Spanish rancho. Investors from England and Canada
transplanted traditions and activities adopted by prosperous citizens: the
first golf course and polo field in Southern California were built in
Riverside.
The first orange trees were planted in 1871, but the citrus industry in
Riverside began two years later when Eliza Tibbets received two Brazilian
navel orange trees sent to her by a friend at the Department of
Agriculture in Washington. The trees thrived in the Southern California
climate and the navel orange industry grew rapidly.
Citrus State Park Within a few years, the successful cultivation of the
newly discovered navel orange led to a California Gold Rush of a different
kind: the establishment of the citrus industry, which is commemorated in
the landscapes and exhibits of the California Citrus State Historic Park
and the restored packing houses in the Downtown's Marketplace district. By
1882, there were more more than half a million citrus trees in California,
almost half of which were in Riverside. The development of refrigerated
railroad cars and innovative irrigation systems established Riverside as
the wealthiest city per capita by 1895..."
- Mission Inn Museum.
"The story of the National Historic Landmark Mission Inn stretches over
more than a century and began with the Miller family. In 1874 Civil
Engineer C.C. Miller arrived in Riverside, began work on a water system
and was paid with a parcel of land in the center of the new town where the
family started a hotel. His son, Frank Augustus Miller, later bought the
property, improved and enlarged it, and by 1903 opened the first wing of
the current Mission Inn building. The building grew in several stages and
now fills an entire block with gardens and towers, arches and stairways.
Throughout the site, visitors are able to view paintings, sculpture and
furnishings from the Mission Inn collections."
