History of the City of Industry from the City of Industry. " In
the 1950's, the area of the San Gabriel Valley , including what is now the
City of Industry, was predominantly rural. Hay, cattle, vineyards, citrus
and walnut groves were among the agricultural mainstays of the region. The
Southern Pacific Railroad had been in the valley since 1872 and was
followed by the Union Pacific Railroad, as well as the Santa Fe line.
With the vast urbanization of the Los Angeles area, resident communities
were moving east to the San Gabriel Valley. Mr. Milton Breivogel of the
Los Angeles County Regional Planning Commission addressed some of the
local residents at one of their monthly property owners meeting. He
reported that along with the rise in residential subdivision, industrial
expansion into the area was being proposed by The Commission, as there was
no other alternative for Los Angeles to expand. Mr. Breivogel pointed-out
that there was the possibility of the population increasing to one million
residents in the area by 1980..."
