- Daily Breeze. "The
history of the Daily Breeze spans three centuries. From its early days in
the late 1890s through the years of 20th century scientific achievement
right into the new millennium, the Daily Breeze has reported it all. It
has been, and continues to be, the voice of the South Bay with an eye on
the world.
Launched as a weekly in 1894 by retired druggist and local political
activist S.D. 'Doc' Barkley, it was first known as The Breeze and served
the local Redondo Beach community with a population of 500. Slowly the
newspaper's coverage and circulation included other beach cities; by 1922
it had become a daily publication boasting a readership of nearly 2,000.
In the late 1920s the Daily Breeze became part of the Copley family
holdings and continued to expand both its news coverage and circulation.
That expansion continued through the war years and the post-war housing
boom that changed the South Bay dramatically.
The Daily Breeze is one of 18 newspapers published by
The Copley
Press, based in La Jolla, Calif. The Copley Press Inc. is the sixth
largest private family owned newspaper group in the United States and is
the 19th largest newspaper group in the country, with news bureaus in
Washington D.C., Mexico City, Sacramento, Los Angeles, Chicago and
Springfield, Ill."
