  • The City of Rolling Hills Estates. "Located on the beautiful Palos Verdes Peninsula in Southwest Los Angeles County, California, the City of Rolling Hills Estates was incorporated on September 18, 1957 in order to preserve the unique rural-residential and equestrian environment."

History

  • History and characteristics. From the City of Palos Verdes Estates, CA. "The City of Palos Verdes Estates, incorporated December 20, 1939, is the oldest of the four cities on the Palos Verdes Peninsula.

The Palos Verdes Peninsula, which became known as Rancho de los Palos Verdes was part of a land grant deeded to Don Delores Sepulveda in 1822 in return for his support of the Mexican Revolution. In 1882, the land was deeded to Jotham Bixby who brought farming to the Peninsula. The Bixby family in turn, sold the land to New York City Financier Frank A. Vanderlip, Sr. in 1913. Vanderlip, then President of National City Bank in New York, covered every mile of his new acquisition on horseback and formed his vision of a magnificent community by the sea. To achieve these goals, Vanderlip called in the most talented experts and professionals of his day."
  • History of Palos Verdes, CA.
  • History of Palos Verdes from the Palos Verdes Library District. "The four cities of the Palos Verdes Peninsula reside on the hills above the Pacific Ocean in one of the most scenic areas of Southern California. Originally part of an 1827 land grant to the Sepulveda family, most of the Peninsula remained a rural, sparsely populated community until the early 1920s. Concerned by the rapid growth of Los Angeles just a few miles away, early residents carefully planned their community's development to feature attractive functional structures which celebrated the area's coastal beauty. They also established cultural and educational institutions which they felt were important to a vibrant society, and the descendants of these institutions still function today.

The history of Palos Verdes Estates, Rolling Hills, Rolling Hills Estates, and Rancho Palos Verdes is now preserved in the Local History Collection, located at the Peninsula Center Library, 701 Silver Spur Road, Rolling Hills Estates, California. The collection is maintained for the use of anyone interested in the history, culture, people, and natural wonders of the Palos Verdes Peninsula. Access to the collection is available during regular Library hours, when there are staff or volunteers to assist.

The materials are in a variety of formats, providing a panorama of what was important in the Peninsula's past, as well as what may be meaningful to future generations. With few exceptions, these resources do not circulate but must be used within the Library.
