- Discover
Gardena from the City of Gardena, CA. "The early beginnings of
Gardena as a community of homes, apart from the great rancho estates of
the Dominguez, Amestoy, Ducazau, and Rosecrans families, date back to the
1880s. A Ventura man, Spencer R. Thorpe, is credited with having started
the first settlement in Gardena Valley, centered near the intersection now
known as 161st Street and Figueroa.
Reports differ as to how Gardena acquired its name, although it is
possible that the name was derived in one of the following ways: One
theory is that the name was given by Nettie Thompson, daughter of the man
from whom Thorpe bought his subdivision, because the valley was such a
beautiful garden spot. Others who have been given the credit were a Mr.
Harris, about 1887; a schoolgirl named Lexie Nichols; or perhaps, Spencer
Thorpe himself. However, it has also been conjectured that its name was
derived from the "Garden Spot," because of the fertile, green valley
created by the nearby Laguna Dominguez slough and channel..."
- Gardena Mayme Dear
Library. "Gardena Library was born under the sponsorship of the
Wednesday Progressive Club before the Los Angeles County Free Library was
founded in 1912. In 1914, Gardena Library became a branch of the new
County System. Only a few months later, the library was transferred to the
jurisdiction of the Los Angeles City Library Board due to annexation. It
was not until August 1951 that Gardena Library came back to the County
System. The present 16,000 sq. ft. building was dedicated on December 5,
1964 and re-named Gardena Mayme Dear Memorial Library on May 30, 1992 in
honor of the late Mrs. Mayme Dear for her many years of dedicated
volunteer services to the library."

- United Way of Greater Los
Angeles. "Throughout the decades, we have been there to not only
catch people who are at risk of falling through the cracks, but to
proactively help them find ways to better their lives through education,
training, and a multitude of rich and varied programs.
Today, we accomplish these things and more through our Bridging the Gap
Fund. Los Angeles County is a place of great promise and grave peril to
millions of citizens. While some are fortunate enough to find success,
many face a constant struggle to obtain their own piece of the American
dream.
Through the support of our donors, the United Way is investing in programs
that bring learning, empowering, and caring to those who are trapped in a
cycle of poverty. Children are learning to read, adults are improving
parenting skills and moving toward greater self-sufficiency, and a
critical safety net of services are being provided to those who need food,
shelter, clothing, and medical attention.
I invite you to spend some time on our Web site. Here, you can learn more
about our Bridging the Gap initiative as well as other programs we offer.
But most of all, I hope you will join us by making a contribution. Just as
every piece of steel counts in building a bridge that spans water, every
dollar matters when building a bridge that helps people cross from peril
to promise..."

Buddhist
- Gardena
Buddhist Church. "Eitaikyo is literally the sutras perpetuated
for eternity, meaning that the sutras will be left for future
generations. Through the designated memorial donations made to the
temple for the Eitaikyo or Memorial Fund, the articles and books needed
to make the sutras or teachings and the rituals accessible to future
generations are being made possible. It is not that we are providing for
memorial services to be held for our ancestors, but our ancestors are
providing the vehicle for us to ensure the future. Because of what our
teachings and our temple meant to our ancestors and to us, we are
providing the link that will assure the accessibility of that teaching
for future generations.
We look at the naijin and all the pieces without giving it any thought,
but each piece can hold a lesson for us and, as a whole, it should
communicate a sense of harmony and balance to us. It gives us an insight
to the reality of the Pure Land and shows us what we should strive to
attain in this life. The harmony and balance is something that is rarely
found in our lives and is an example of what could be.
Let us take this opportunity to listen to the teachings and help ensure
the vitality and the availability of that teaching for the future and
maintain our temple so it can continue to provide the vision of what our
world could be. This will bring to life the true meaning of our teaching
and of this observance."

It has always been our goal to be the most affordable synagogue in the
area. We believe that all that want to worship and socialize in a
conservative shul should be able to do it at an affordable cost.
We offer a 'hamish' atmosphere and a deep history to all of those who
wish to join us.
We invite any and all in our Jewish community to "try us on for size" by
visiting during a Friday night or Saturday morning service."
