-
History of Cypress, CA from the City of Cypress. "The first
Californians were Native Americans who lived in small villages known as
rancherias and it is reasonable to assume that they found the area to be a
profitable hunting ground. Native Americans of the area mainly ate
grasses, herbs, roots, berries, nuts, or trapped small animals.
As Cypress was a lush grassland fed by numerous artesian wells, one can
easily envision roving bands of Gabrielinos, the dominant tribe in the
area, foraging for the abundant food found in the region. The shelters of
these early inhabitants of Cypress and of the area were made in a conical
shape of poles covered by thatched grass or fibers..."
- History of
Cypress, CA from the Orange County City Guide. "Just how Cypress
got its name is a bit of a mystery. The city never had many cypress trees,
local historicans say. In fact, it once was called Dairy City after its
principal residents - dairy cows.
Civic leaders settled on the name Cypress when the city incorporated in
1956, and legend has it that cypress trees planted around the town's first
school gave the area its name. But in one old school photograph unearthed
by a city historian, no such trees appear..."

District covers 46 square miles incorporating the cities of Anaheim,
Buena Park, Cypress, Garden Grove, La Palma, Orange, and Stanton. With
the District's diverse ethnic population speaking 56+ different
languages, our students attend 23 sites spread across the District.
Anaheim Union High School District is proud to have the second highest
API scoring school in the State. Along with this achievement, the
District has accumulated numerous awards including California
Distinguished Schools, Golden Bell Awards, and Golden State Exam awards
for student achievement. Additionally, several schools have the
International Baccalaureate program along with Junior Reserve Officer
Training Corps (JROTC) programs, and our new Junior Leadership Academy (JLC),
which is at the junior high level, articulating to the high school JROTC
program.
In support of community needs, the District offers Adult Education
programs, special education programs for severely handicapped students,
and community parenting support through classes and the community
parenting bus. The District is also the second-largest employer in the

outstanding programs in music, art, and athletics. The Anaheim Prep
Sports/Activities Foundation, in conjunction with the District, provides
for the Junior High School Intramural Athletic program, which has a 65%
participation rate.
It is widely known that the Anaheim Union High School District has a
growing student population in the eastern sector. Studies have shown
that smaller school sizes promote a better learning environment. With
the complexities of No Child Left Behind (NCLB) compliance, the District
desires to build a new junior high school to replace the former Fremont
Junior High School, thereby achieving this goal.
All of these programs lead to the Anaheim Union High School District
having a 95% graduation rate."
