Hawaiian Gardens has been fortunate to have several groups of citizens that, even prior to incorporation, worked to advance Hawaiian Gardens as a community.

The name is said to be derived from a bamboo shack refreshment stand opened at the corner of Carson and Norwalk boulevards in 1927 by an unknown businessman. The stand was said to resemble a Hawaiian Garden."

Hawaiian Gardens Public Library. "The Hawaiian Gardens Library was founded in 1974 with a bookmobile serving the community. The next site for the library was at 12134 Tilbury Street (the former city hall); it served the community from 1979 until December 1987. On January 19, 1988, the library was relocated to a 2,000 square foot building at the present location in the Hawaiian Gardens Town Center. The official dedication was held on March 9, 1988. In 1989, the facility was expanded to 4,000 square feet. An open house, with City and County dignitaries attending, was held on October 18, 1989."
